SI College Fashion Trendsetters

Posted by nickwhi36 on September 29, 2006

SI put together a photo gallery of 10 NCAA fashion trendsetters.

1.Patrick Ewing, Georgetown | Knee pads

Patrick Ewing embraced the knee pads at an early age, but may have been better off had he been introduced to the headband.

I’ve always thought that anyone with knee and elbow pads on, looked like an idiot. I guess SI agrees.

2. Jason Terry, Arizona | The high socks

Not only did former Arizona point guard Jason Terry hike his socks up to his knees, he wore five pairs of them for every game. Eight years later, the high sock look still hasn’t caught on (unless you count Keith Van Horn).

Keith Van Horn, enough said!!!!

3. Ray Lewis, Miami | The half-shirt

We don’t want to say anything bad about Ray Lewis, but thankfully, the half-shirt look never quite caught on.

I, personally, always thought this was cool looking.

4. Adam Morrison, Gonzaga | The mustache

The cheesy mustache used to be the domain of `70s porn stars and Larry Bird. Then Adam Morrison came along…

Fear the stache!!!

5. Fab Five, Michigan | The baggy shorts

The original doctors of style were Michigan’s Fab Five, whose baggy shorts are still a fashion staple 15 years after they first donned them.

The baggy shorts with the black sneakers and black socks, wow. I was always a fan of the fab five, even when Chris “bone head” Webber called the time out they didnt have.

6. LaDainian Tomlinson, TCU | The dark visor

Before he began terrorizing NFL defenses, LaDainian Tomlinson was known as the running back from TCU who wore the mysterious dark visor.

I remember when I was playing football in high school. I have to wear a visor cause I’m legally blind in my left eye. I always wanted one the dark ones or the ones with mirror tint.

7. Eric Montross, North Carolina | Number “00″

How can a big, goofy-looking white guy start a fashion trend? By wearing the unhip 00 and leading his team to the 1993 national championship.

The “Big Chief” Robert Parrish wore double zero, and he turned out fine.

8. Reggie Bush, USC | The big diamond earing

Most athletes wait until they turn pro to start sporting the bling, but this was not the case with USC’s Reggie Bush, seen here on the cover of SI with a diamond almost the size of a baby’s head.

I’ve always thought it was kind of girly to have a ear ring period, but I guess Bush could afford them.

9. LeBron James | The tattoo pads

LeBron James’ never played a minute of college ball, but when his Catholic high school required him to cover his tattoos while he played, he placed placed patches and wristbands to cover them up. Before long, a whole new look had sprouted.

10. Sebastian Janikowski, Florida St. | The angry kicker

Many athletes have shaved their heads, but few of them were kickers trapped in the body of a linebacker, such as FSU’s Sebastian Janikowski.

This guy was a first rounder. Wow.

Kobe switches from number 8 to 24

Posted by nickwhi36 on September 29, 2006

Kobe in new jersey

The photo? Bryant focused, driving the lane, and wearing jersey No. 24.”I guess it takes some getting used to,” Bryant tells me of his new/old number. “I wore the number in high school, so it’s a lot easier for me to adjust than it is for my fans. They’ve seen No. 8 for 10 years. For them, it’ll be weird.”

Still, Bryant admits he is chomping at the bit. “I’ve worn it once,” he adds, referencing the cover photo shoot. “But it’s not the same as putting it on and running onto the floor. Then it’s for real.” link

NBA superstar Kobe Bryant will wear number 24 starting next year. After the controversies involving his rape case and his role in the firing of Phil Jackson and the trading of fellow superstar Shaq. Kobe feels this is the start of a new chapter of his career.

Bryant’s switch is the NBA’s most significant jersey number change since the 1994-95 season, when Michael Jordan came out of retirement wearing the No. 45 for the final 22 games of the season. Jordan’s No. 23 had been retired by the Bulls in his honor. For the next three seasons, Jordan went back to the No. 23. link

Nike Football Campaign

Posted by nickwhi36 on September 23, 2006

Nike has a new football campaign featuring a fictional highschool football team called the Biscoe Hawks and the main character Ryan. The first commercial which began airing this summer called “two-a-days” was starring Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons, LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers, and Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears. It featured cameos from Deion Sanders, Steve Young, Jill Arrington, Urban Meyer, Don Shula, Matt Leinart, and probably someone else I didnt noticed. I love this commercial, but its only gotten better with the second commercial. The second commercial called “game day” also stars Vick, Urlacher, and Tomlinson, but adds Troy Polamalu. This commercial features the same cameo but now has Super Bowl winning coach Jimmy Johnson as the player’s history teacher, Jillian Barbarie of Fox pre-game show fame as the head cheerleader, and this is what makes the commercial so great, Lee Corso as the team’s mascot. Marlin Briscoe, the first African- American starting profession quarterback in the modern era, is also featured in these commercials. You go to this website were you can view the commercials and view the cast bios.

Nike and Kansas State Men’s Basketball

Posted by nickwhi36 on September 17, 2006

Not only has Bob Huggins grabbed one of the best recruits in the national in Micheal Beasley and possibly Bill Walker, he has help begin in some extra revenue for the Kansas State Athletic department. Kansas State has signed a 12.3 million dollar contract with Nike to outfit all 16 of their varsity sports for the next 6 years. This isnt the biggest deal, Nike has a deal with North Carolina worth a reported 28.34 million dollars, but before Huggins arrival the shoe revenue for Kansas State was an incredible amount of zero dollars!!!

Some experts feel this is a gamble by Nike, that Huggins will lead Kansas State to becoming a national powerhouse. They feel that Beasley and Walker both are one and done players. Their are no promises that Walker will even be enrolled their this season, after being ruled ineligible to play highschool basketball this year, he is trying to enroll in Kansas State as early as December.  He hopes to graduate early, pass his SATs and get through the NCAA intial Clearinghouse.
